 Serena  I have been lucky to teach at C. J. Schurter since 2006. Before coming to CJS, I taught in North London area, UK for 2 years. This is my 6th year of teaching Kindergarten at CJS and I have also taught Grade 1, 2 and 3. I have lived in Slave Lake most of my life. My two children (who are 8 and 10), and I love to go to the beach, camping, and fishing.

 

What's Happening in May?

Themes - Weather, Mother's Day, Bears, Transportation, Community

Personal and Social Responsibility
- We continue to work on following classroom routines and behaviour expectations. We work together to keep our classroom a happy place to be. We will keep focusing and moving through our day with being successful with our mission statement.

Our Classroom Mission Statement:

We always try to be nice, helpful and responsible. We listen quietly, wait our turns, share and play with many friends.

Early Literacy
- We continue to practice letters and sounds by working on sound isolation and using reading strategies like Stretchy Snake, Eagle Eye and Lips the Fish.
- We will begin to work on hearing, differentiating to identify a specific sound location in a word, segment all sounds in small words and continue to word with beginning and ending sounds
- When read together, we will really look at the pictures in the storybook and predicting what will happen in the stories. We will continue to focus on the importance of naming main characters and giving many details when retelling a story.
-We continue to work on proper letter formation to develop the good habits needed after kindergarten.
-We have been working hard on understanding on how to form lowercase letters: 
Magic 'c' letters - c,o,a,d,q,g
Diver letters - b,h,m,n,p,r
Frog Jump letters - t,f,k,y,i,j
Odd Ball letters - l,u,e,z

- During morning message time, we look for  Word Wall words (words to this wall when they are recognized often) and we talk about word possibilities (Oral Cloze) in sentences so we are more ready to use Skippy Frog when we begin to read. The new concept this month cutting and pasting the words of the morning message sentence back into order.

Early Numeracy
- We will compare numbers to understand more, less and equal
- We will build and extend patterns.
- We will compared objects using the weigh scales and blocks.
- During play, we are constantly building 3D shapes, sorting, and patterning

Physical Skills and Well Being in the classroom
- strengthening pincer hand grasp, scissor use with sensory bins and tools, paper work, 
- Identifying healthy choices for first snack.

Creative Expression
- dramatic play within our T
ransportation and Community themes. 
- Transportation and Community themed crafts. 
- We sing Daily songs with dances and movement breaks.

Environment and Community Awareness
- participating in a variety of centers to explore properties of materials (such as sand, water, playdough, beans, rice, scrap paper and many different building toys) and using a them safely and properly. 

- During our Transportation unit, we investigated rules of the road, signs as well as different vehicles.
- During our Community Unit, we discussed important jobs in our community.

Citizenship and Identity
- We work to keep our classroom community harmonious. 
- During our Transportation unit, we investigated rules of the road, signs as well as different vehicles.
-If you haven't completed the All About Me Seesaw Activities, please make time to do these with your child. Don't hesitate to ask me for help. Every child wants to have their time to shine in our class.

Technology
- We have used the Smart Board all year to show we are here, calendar activities and movement activities.
- We are using Seesaw to complete more activities as a class. We log in using a QR code. Find the lightbulb for our activities. Listen to the instructions and then Add Response.
At home, please login using your child's Gmail and password using the Google sign-in. It should be on their folder.

Early Literacy
- We are working hard stretching out words into their sounds and combining sounds into words.
- We read together by really looking at the pictures in the storybook and predicting what will happen in the stories. We are working to remember what the characters are called in the books. We are sharing what our favourite parts are in the story.
- We are continuing to review rhyming, letter sounds, and beginning/ending sounds in words. 
- During morning message time, we are looking for the Word Wall words we know. Then cutting the sentence words apart and gluing them back into order.

- We are comparing 2 numbers and talking about more, less and equal. 
- We are reviewing all patterns: AB, ABC, ABB and AAB.
- We are comparing objects using the weigh scales, pouring things in and out of containers, comparing the height of things.
