HPSD and Heart River Housing Partner to Create New Apprenticeship Pathways for Students

At the Board Meeting on January 20, District Principal of Collegiate Planning and Special Projects Brennan McDonald announced a new community partnership aimed at expanding hands-on apprenticeship opportunities for students in the skilled trades.

High Prairie School Division has partnered with Heart River Housing to provide students with additional apprenticeship opportunites in the form of carpentry, plumbing, and electrical trades.

As part of the initiative, Heart River Housing will designate one of its rental homes to HPSD for renovation, with students working under the supervision of a certified carpenter. Participants will earn Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) hours while developing practical trade skills. The program is currently in development with a plan to launch in September 2026.

Superintendent Murray Marran highlighted the broader community impact of the partnership, emphasizing the role of education in civic and community development. He noted that students will not only gain valuable career experience, but also contribute directly to the community and deepen a sense of belonging.

The initiative will begin in High Prairie, with plans to expand to Falher and Slave Lake. As part of the selection process, students will participate in job interviews to demonstrate accountability and commitment.
